JSPS International Fellowships for Research in Japan 2027/2028 provides opportunities for researchers from ASEAN countries to conduct research in Japan under the guidance of a host researcher at a Japanese university or research institution.
The fellowship is open to both doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who meet the eligibility requirements.
Fellowship Highlights
- Fellowship period: 1–12 months
- Fellowship start date: 1 July 2027 – 31 March 2028
- Round-trip airfare
- Monthly allowance:
- JPY 362,000/month for Ph.D. holders
- JPY 200,000/month for non-Ph.D. holders
- Settling-in allowance of JPY 200,000 for fellowships of 3 months or longer
- Overseas travel insurance
- Research support allowance of up to JPY 70,000/month may also be available through the host researcher
Who Can Apply?
The program includes:
- ASEAN nationals who already hold a Ph.D. and obtained their degree less than 6 years ago
- ASEAN nationals currently in a doctoral program and expected to obtain their Ph.D. within 2 years
- Non-ASEAN researchers who meet the additional research experience requirements in an ASEAN country
Applicants must also have a prospective host researcher in Japan. Please note that JSPS does not arrange or introduce host researchers for applicants.

Applications from ASEAN countries are submitted through the ASEAN University Network (AUN) nomination process.
